Successful Business and Community Partnership – Skylight and The Warehouse

‘Getting Stronger’ – a game for building yourself up to get through tough times, is produced by Skylight and has had a successful year thanks to the continued support of the Warehouse customers in the Central and Eastern North Island region.

This is the fifth ‘add-a-dollar’ campaign in which the Warehouse has supported Skylight. Throughout July, customers were asked at the checkout if they would like to add a dollar to their purchase to support the cause. The 2016 Campaign raised $36,722, with 100% of these funds being used for the purchase of the ‘Getting Stronger’ game and to provide training for professionals to use this game with children aged 8-14 years.

The Warehouse sponsorship support has meant that 32 Schools in the Central and Eastern North Island region have a total of 61 staff trained as Travellers Programme facilitators.

Skylight Chief Executive Heather Henare says 2016 will bring opportunities for many more schools and students to get involved with the programme and The Getting Stronger Game. This game provides young people, with the opportunity to have non-threatening conversations about tough issues that arise. The primary focus of the Getting Stronger Game is on the game and not on the individual playing the game.  It gives young people an opportunity to safely talk about who they are, things they think and feel, and about ideas they can use to help manage the tough issues in their lives

One teacher commented – “We live in a small rural community with students who would benefit greatly through this programme. Some are in care of family members and have already experienced more than any child should. Giving them skills to reflect on their lives is valuable in helping them move forward. It is an important support system we can offer our students as they transition the many stages of life.”

Regional Manager John Basson says, “It is pleasing to see the number of schools and students that have benefited from the generosity of our customers. Region 5 is particularly passionate about community involvement and it is great that the funds raised are making a difference to the lives of families and young people within our local communities”.

Stores involved in the fundraising campaign include Taupo, Tokoroa, Whakatane, Tauranga Central, Fraser Cove, Papamoa, Rotorua, Gisborne, Hastings and Napier.
